Chips Packaging with a Natural Twist

OHO Lentil Chips, introduced to the Lithuanian market by historic local snacks producer Bold Brands, offer a symbol of more natural and healthy snacking. To reflect this, the packaging design combines smooth pastel colors with craft paper texture elements, creating a playful and attractive appeal to younger audiences, the brand's main target demographic.

The main idea behind the OHO Lentil Chips packaging design is to present the product as a healthier and yet funky alternative to ordinary snacks. Unlike the bright and intense colors commonly found in snack packaging, the use of kraft paper as a background gives it a touch of natural feel. Illustrated graphic elements add life and connection with the customer, while the flavoring is communicated through high-quality photo images. This combination of different design elements makes the product distinguishable and attractive to the typical customer of such appetizers, providing a perceptible sense of naturalness.

The OHO Lentil Chips packaging is realized using flexography with a paper touch varnish. The snacks bag measures 190 x 250 x 50 mm and is printed on polypropylene, ensuring durability and convenience for consumers.

The design team behind OHO Lentil Chips includes Creative Director Motiejus Gaigalas, Head of Design Vytenis Petrusevicius, and Graphic Designers Sandra Ramoskaite and Vytenis Petrusevicius.

The product is packed in a standard bag, chosen for its familiarity and convenience for consumers. The goal was to create a graphical impact rather than select an unusual packaging medium, taking into consideration consumer habits and the limitations of the packaging hardware.

The OHO Lentil Chips packaging design project started in January 2020 and was completed in May 2020. Extensive research was conducted to determine the target audience and create an appealing product packaging specifically tailored to their preferences. The design team also focused on understanding the graphic elements that would help consumers recognize the product as a healthier snacking option while considering aesthetically pleasing components that would provoke a buying decision.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was the dominance of vibrant and intense color packaging in the snacks category. The task was to create packaging that would communicate a healthier choice without relying on color intensity alone. Instead, the design team incorporated playful elements and subtle taste-indicating illustrations to attract attention and convey the product's unique qualities.

The OHO Lentil Chips packaging design, with its emphasis on naturalness and playfulness, stands out in the snacks market. It successfully appeals to the target audience and communicates the product's healthier attributes through a combination of visual elements. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021, recognizing its outstanding creativity and contribution to improving the quality of life.
